Emergency Response Team
The ERT
The Emergency Response Team is the core emergency division of WRR and the first unit deployed to critical roadway situations. ERT responders are trained to take command of fast-moving, high-risk incidents and stabilize the scene before conditions worsen. Whether it's a collision, a vehicle stopped in live traffic, a hazard blocking the roadway, or a driver in immediate danger, ERT is the team that steps in.
ERT members specialize in rapid arrival, decisive action, and full scene control. They assess the environment within seconds, identify immediate threats, and make the roadway safe for everyone involved. Their focus is to prevent further danger, reduce secondary accidents, and restore safe traffic flow as quickly as possible.
ERT responsibilities include:
-
Rapid response and on-scene leadership
-
Securing the area using cones, flares, lighting, and vehicle positioning
-
Managing emergency traffic flow to protect victims and prevent pile-ups
-
Extracting or relocating individuals from unsafe positions
-
Stabilizing vehicles that are in hazardous or unstable conditions
-
Initial emergency actions such as hazard containment or fire-risk mitigation
-
Handling roadway hazards including debris, spills, and blocked lanes
-
Providing urgent roadside assistance when a stalled vehicle creates a dangerous situation
-
Coordinating with other WRR divisions during multi-unit operations
ERT’s core mission is simple:
Take control. Stop the danger. Protect the people. Clear the scene.
ERT responders operate with a high level of discipline, focus, and professionalism. Although WRR is not law enforcement, fire, or EMS, the Emergency Response Team bridges the gap between everyday roadside help and full emergency services. ERT ensures the scene is safe, stabilized, and contained until additional units — WRR or external agencies — arrive.
Through strong training, communication, and tactical awareness, ERT keeps the community safer by preventing minor emergencies from turning into major ones.
What ERT Does
The Emergency Response Team (ERT) is responsible for responding to active emergency calls and dispatched incidents throughout our coverage area. When a report comes in—whether from a driver, a witness, or our monitoring system—ERT immediately begins the response process. Once a call is confirmed, our dispatch center sends the closest available ERT unit to the location. Units receive call details, hazards, vehicle descriptions, and any safety concerns before arrival.
On the road, ERT operators use proper response driving, scene awareness, and traffic management to reach the caller as safely and quickly as possible. Upon arrival, the responder establishes scene control, positions the vehicle for protection, activates emergency lighting, and evaluates the situation. Our goal is always to secure the area first, then help the people involved.
ERT assists with emergency breakdowns, stalled vehicles in dangerous spots, roadway hazards, partial or fully blocked lanes, and other urgent issues that require immediate attention. Responders can stabilize vehicles, guide drivers to safety, clear obstructions, provide urgent roadside assistance, or coordinate additional WRR units when needed.
When dispatch sends us to an accident—not by request of the people involved, but through a witnessed or reported crash—ERT will approach professionally and respectfully. Our team will check on the occupants and simply ask if anyone needs help or would like our services. If assistance is requested, we begin scene protection, hazard reduction, and vehicle stabilization. If help is declined, ERT will still ensure the roadway remains safe for others.
Throughout every call, ERT focuses on fast arrival, clear communication, and solving the problem quickly without causing further danger. Our team prevents secondary accidents, supports traffic flow, and restores safety as soon as possible. Whether we are assisting the caller directly or controlling an accident scene from a distance, ERT plays a critical role in ensuring safe and efficient emergency response across the community.
